Nome is an in-between place in multiple areas. In this small town of about 3 or 4 thousand people, Nome-based services such as government, transportation, health, etc., also serve those in outlying areas and villages, totalling up to about 9 or 10 thousand people in the Bering Straits Region. Nome is also in between cultures and time: a place that's about half Eskimo and half non-Native; a place where subsistence living and modern technology meet. In Nome, and especially outside of town, you get a sense of being small surrounded by the vastly big outdoors. . Nome is a place where you have to be a little crazy to prevent total insanity. You meet a lot of characters in Nome. The author of this website was there about ten years ago. Many things may have changed since then.
