Cats are good animals to observe communicate as they are very deliberate. They will either touch you when they walk past or not. That simple behavior speaks volumes. If your cat walks very close to you and touches you with only the tip of his tail, he is acknowledging your presence in a friendly manner, equivalent to saying “Hi.” However, rubbing up against you may be a dominant behavior, marking you as their territory (after all, they own you), and telling you to do something for them, probably food related.
